“ZAMBIA : FOLLOW THE COPPER MONEY”

Synopsis

The largest copper foundry in Africa is located in Mufulira, Zambia.

Mining copper, with its sulphur dioxide and sulphuric acid toxic waste doesn’t only generate important levels of pollution, but also affects the local population with pulmonary and skin diseases as well as cancers, whilst in 2004, Glencore, the large raw materials merchant put an environmental loan of 48 million euros given by the European Bank of Investments in its coffers.

With the help of a French NGO, the Zambian economist Savior Mwambwa would like to take Glencore to court for damages.

Last April, five NGOs took the multinational to court for violation of the OECD principles.

This film won the Albert Londres audio-visual Prize in 2012.
